concept
the building structure is conceived through the circulation paths (access from multiple sides), the sequence of spaces across different levels (analogy to hiking in the mountains), and the contrast between open and closed spatial volumes. the play of light on the wooden cladding, with slats in front of the glazing rotated depending on the time of day, shapes the seemingly weightless building volume. the stream running through the building is staged, the outdoor space / tauern gorge becomes part of the experience in all weather conditions.
light guidance
specific natural light sources are assigned to the experience area:
narrow roof glazing along the visitor paths (theme areas), “cinemascope” views through the west façade towards the hohe tauern (closable with simple wooden slats).
overlay of staged and educational landscape perception in the “eagle’s view,” light lens at the “tauern gorge.”
administration/fodoz are arranged around an “inner courtyard”; views to the outside are purposefully placed and, like other openings in the prefabricated elements, are closed in the evening or depending on the position of the sun using simple rotatable wooden slats.
in contrast to the introverted wooden prefab structure, the entrance area is presented externally with partly transparent, translucent and colored glass elements.

circulation
a “comprehensive” access band on the south and east leads around the building to guide visitors arriving from different directions to the entrance. at the same time, the gently sloping access ramps define the “more intimate” area of the natpaz. the path through the building is thematic and leads via gently sloping ramps across several levels (tauern experience hike), to offer visitors flowing perspectives of the building and landscape. the circulation is barrier-free (and also supported by an elevator).
parking
by placing the parking spaces partly beneath the natpaz, visitors are brought as close as possible to the building and protected from rain. the light lens “tauern gorge” already turns the access into part of the experience.
construction method
roof and walls of the experience area and administration/fodoz are built in prefabricated timber construction on top of reinforced concrete slabs.
