initial situation
the x-ray practice is located in the municipality of gänserndorf in an area with detached houses and agricultural buildings. the property is accessible from two sides. the main access, the driveway to the car parks and for emergency services, is via scheunengasse. the staff entrance is located on quellengasse. the building is designed in such a way that a square is formed to the south in front of the main entrance, which is further accentuated by a canopy. emergency services can drive directly to the main entrance and, protected by the canopy, transport patients.
entrance – general areas
the staff and patient entrances were arranged on opposite sides of the building to ensure separate routes for staff and patients. patients enter the waiting area via a vestibule, where the reception desk for registration is immediately visible. the light-flooded waiting room is equipped with generous seating and a cloakroom. plants add to the cosy atmosphere. at the eastern end of the waiting area are the sanitary facilities for visitors and a quiet alcove that can be used by small children to play or by nursing mothers. the examination rooms on the ground floor are arranged as three oval room islands covered with membranes in different shades of red, freely positioned in the access zone and therefore accessible from two sides, i.e. separately for patients and staff. the reception and a meeting area where staff and patients meet are located at the transitions between internal and external access. the reception desk formally grows out of the largest island in the centre of the building and is also covered with a red membrane. the large numbers on the individual cubicles are easy to read, even for patients with poor eyesight, and, together with the red membrane-covered walls and the upholstered benches in the waiting area, which are covered in faux leather in shades of red, form a design element in the waiting area.

the staff entrance is also via a vestibule. the cloakroom and staff toilet are located directly at the entrance, and a staircase leads from here to the adjoining rooms on the upper floor. all examination rooms are directly accessible from the access area, where the workstations for diagnosis and X-ray equipment are also located. the long shelving unit also serves as a storage area for materials and equipment. all examination rooms are accessible from two sides. Patients arrive for treatment via one of two changing rooms per examination room. All examination rooms have natural lighting. those rooms with permanent workstations that do not need to be darkened for functional reasons have direct lighting.
staff rooms
the stairs lead directly to the light-flooded common room on the upper floor, which is equipped with a small kitchenette, several dining tables with chairs and upholstered benches, and a long standing desk that runs along the façade. direct access to the loggia with wooden slatted flooring and the terrace allows for relaxing breaks outdoors. the staff changing rooms for women and men are each equipped with a shower and toilet. a staff room is available during work breaks.
materials
from the outside, the building is very discreet thanks to its anthracite-coloured textile membrane cladding and large-format, floor-to-ceiling glass surfaces, blending unobtrusively into the heterogeneous neighbourhood. Inside, the materials used are shown in their original form wherever functionality allows: exposed concrete walls, polished and sealed screeds as floor surfaces, glass, textile membranes and wood. In the examination rooms, conductive floors and partition walls with lead inserts were installed in accordance with legal requirements.
