wienerwaldgymnasium tullnerbach

architectural concept
the new Wienerwaldgymnasium school building, which was still listed in the competition as a branch of the BG|BRG Purkersdorf at the Tullnerbach location, is situated in a desirable green location surrounded by forest and nature. the relatively steep slope and existing height restrictions are addressed with a terraced structure that steps down four storeys towards the south, creating spacious terraces on all levels. the structure, which cantilevers over the car park, accommodates the large outdoor sports field. the entire school area remains car-free, with only bicycle parking spaces and a car park for people with special needs located directly at the entrance on level 0.

indoor campus
the layout of the rooms around the four-storey auditorium is clear and straightforward, making it easy to find your way around. different spatial situations offer a wide range of uses. the indoor campus invites you to sit and observe, is a place for relaxation, play and learning, and offers space for all kinds of events. it is a meeting place for all pupils and teachers. on the main entrance level are the staff room, the kitchen and dining area, the library, the administrative offices, the multi-purpose hall, the music room and the rooms for afternoon supervision. the large reading staircase connects the entrance level with the lower level of the building, which houses the rooms for art, crafts, science and IKT, the gym and the gymnastics room with the necessary ancillary rooms. the classrooms are located on the two upper levels – level 2: 19 classrooms for secondary level 1; level 3: 13 classrooms for secondary level 2. here, mobile partition walls allow for spacious room connections for exam situations. almost all rooms have direct access to adjoining terraces or open areas.
outdoor campus
an essential part of the spatial concept is the extension of the learning areas to include directly adjacent outdoor areas such as terraces, green spaces, seating steps, open-air classrooms and balconies. the auditorium, library, multi-purpose room, dining area and after-school care facilities can be opened up to covered outdoor areas, allowing students to work, eat or relax outdoors. the spatial concept is designed to support the spirit of the school: openness, clarity, orientation, networking, generosity, light-flooded friendliness, flowing transitions between inside and outside.

open spaces
it is beneficial for pupils' health to switch frequently between indoor and outdoor spaces. great importance is attached to outdoor teaching, which can take place in the immediate vicinity of the classrooms and learning areas, as well as in the nearby natural environment of the surrounding forest.

materials
when selecting building materials, great attention is paid to the ecological footprint and CO2 emissions caused by the production, transport and dismantling of the materials. the transparent surfaces are fitted with external sun protection. overhanging roofs or balconies serve as sun protection when the sun is high and protect the façades from weather and pollution, making them easier to clean and maintain.
