urban planning solution
the fundamental decisions regarding the organisation and positioning of the building on the site are essentially influenced by three considerations:
- strict separation between kitchen deliveries and access to childcare and assisted living
- central location of the childcare facilities on a single level with direct access to the outdoor areas
- adaptation to the existing building structures to ensure barrier-free evacuation of both the new building and the existing structures.
architecture, function and access
the delivery area for the catering kitchen, as well as the collection point for meals on wheels, is situated on the western side of the site. this allows for a strict separation between delivery traffic and pedestrians, ensuring that children, elderly residents and visitors can come and go safely at all times. the delivery area and the commercial kitchen are located in the basement to provide a barrier-free connection to the dining area on the ground floor of the existing care home. this also allows synergies with existing facilities in the existing kitchen to be utilised. a cut in the terrain provides the commercial kitchen’s work areas with natural light.

all childcare facilities are located on a single level with barrier-free access and are grouped around a large inner courtyard with direct access to the required outdoor areas. three central cloakrooms allow for a clear separation between dirty and clean areas and act as a dirt-trapping zone at the exits to the outdoor areas.
the continuation of the existing u-shaped building structure towards the north allows for two connections between the existing building and the new construction and ensures the required barrier-free evacuation of all levels. staircases and lifts suitable for nursing beds are provided at both building connections. in front of each lift, there are large areas providing sufficient waiting space for nursing beds. the medical care rooms on the upper floor can be reached via one of the two stairwells with a lift. this also ensures barrier-free transport of patients by emergency services. on the upper floor, the sloping terrain to the north allows direct, barrier-free access to the assisted living area. the new underground car park, with 72 parking spaces, is accessed via a two-lane connection from the old underground car park. from here, all areas of the new building can be reached via both stairwells in a short distance. to meet the needs of a growing community, various options for additional storeys are possible.
