the project proposes, as a solution to the design task, a kind of divided building composed of two almost independent typological systems: a) a landscape-like structure, a broad base volume that is almost “absorbed” between the existing surfaces of the underground car park and the akh, and b) an elevated, abstract geometric structure. both typological systems operate within the tectonic context of their surroundings (both built and landscape) as well as within the programmatic realm (the organization and arrangement of the required functional areas). a) the landscape-shaped base acts as a connective surface, in varying curvatures stitching together the level of the akh and the slightly lower level of the parking garage.
the surface of the garage thereby transforms into an unexpectedly positive urban field in the sense of an open, boundary-less plaza, while the ramp-like depressions create a surprisingly functional hybrid (a “bastard”) between serial negative spaces, light wells, courtyards, distant memories of auditoria, and landscape. these hybridizing negative incisions are the points at which the base volume gains contour—and where university life can unfold and relax. b) the elevated, abstract geometric structure functions primarily as an urban element, a kind of volumetric roof. it spans the junction between the akh and the parking garage, creating precisely here a protected open exterior space—an efficient variation of a plaza, defined not by lateral boundaries but by an “above and below” enclosure. the project exceeds the official building alignment and setback lines in key areas. while this is spatially comprehensible within the urban context, according to the information available to the jury it represents an insurmountable obstacle to rapid implementation. this constitutes the main reason for its ranking in second place.
