building concept
the newly proposed building continues the characteristic structural logic of the existing urban fabric between linker bahngasse and neulingasse, extending it coherently toward tongasse. the corner volume at tongasse responds to the existing tree population, creating a transparent entrance zone at ground level. with its three upper floors, it establishes a clear architectural dialogue between old and new, deliberately reducing its height to highlight the historical building by contrast.
a single-storey connecting wing, continuing the line of the library building and linked via a covered passage, bridges over the already constructed underground garage. open at ground level, the green space continues beneath this volume, maintaining an uninterrupted visual and spatial connection to the library via an open access path. daylight and sunlight exposure to the adjacent laboratory building remain unaffected. a potential future connection to the library building can be considered as part of a long-term development strategy.

main entrance and circulation
the new main entrance is located at the intersection of tongasse and neulingasse. it recedes beneath the upper volume, creating a sheltered arrival zone. the entrance hall acts as the central circulation hub between old and new buildings, providing direct access to the administrative wing within the bridge volume.
the administration and directorate offices are located on the first floor, precisely positioned between the two existing vertical circulation cores of the laboratory’s lateral wings. these spaces overlook the existing generously dimensioned green courtyard. the office spaces within the corner volume follow a consistent structure across all levels.
the existing staircase is insufficient to accommodate the vertical circulation needs between the old and new structures. a new vertical circulation core in the extension ensures seamless movement throughout the new building and supplements connectivity between new and existing elements.
the existing staircases will be repurposed as emergency escape routes. fire compartmentation is defined across four floors within the corner volume, with a second fire compartment formed by the administrative wing.
