concept
embedding the flat outpatient function wing between the existing retaining wall and ewt1 creates synergy effects for the future competence center and the intended interdisciplinary connections. the existing retaining wall remains untouched by the new building, the stepped floor levels avoid cost-intensive slope stabilization and foundation measures.
urban opening towards vordernbergerstrasse
due to the corresponding expansion of functional areas in ewt2 and ewt3 (standard upgrade), reconstruction of the connecting wing is not required, allowing for the clearing and sunlight exposure of the previously shaded "backyard situation" between ewt1, slope, and intermediate wing. a uniformly structured building along the slope on the west side of the existing complex forms the final expansion stage of the lkh leoben extension. the placement of the new psychiatry building enables the interim preservation of the existing structures.
the outpatient departments from construction phase 1 will subsequently be connected to the outpatient areas in ewt2 and psychiatry, allowing access to all outpatient departments via a main axis. the waiting areas of the outpatient clinics are located along the bright façade of the generously designed main axis. all treatment areas are naturally lit through wide, upward-opening light courts.
the level connection between new and existing building floors is made possible by the following organization:
building services space for the outpatient clinics with required ceiling height placed directly below the outpatient areas. desired height of the surgical floor is achieved through an efficient "backpack solution" for the technical floor (with required height) and reduced floor height for staff rooms.
construction of the underground garage south of the outpatient center, with clear separation between ambulance access and private cars, offers the following advantages:
- direct connection to the main access road vordernbergerstrasse
- direct connection of all outpatient clinics to the parking deck with immediate access to each clinic
- protection of the residential areas located to the north
- independent construction possibility of outpatient clinics and underground garage
- reduction of building services costs due to sufficient ventilation openings and tree islands with air circulation
- cost efficiency in construction resulting from the location (no slope stabilization required) and single-storey layout
- natural lighting via "light islands" and slots
- creation of a park landscape over the garage deck
the patient and visitor car park located on the slope side is easily accessible from ewt1 via the green roof of the new building. creation of this base zone with serial light courts reduces the perceived height of ewt1. on the west side, a new slope-side fire access road (max. 15% incline) is planned, also serving for deliveries to the building services area on the 1st floor.
