design principles
the new donaustadt school campus must, due to the property ownership conditions, provide a solution for both schools – the primary school and the grammar school – within different development scenarios. the predetermined property boundaries, which define the location of the schools, are a key factor in this. the campus concept must function optimally both as a stand-alone grammar school (with external use on the western plot) and as a shared campus for the primary and grammar schools.

both schools share a common forecourt along maculanstrasse but are designed as separate building volumes set apart from each other. a green corridor runs between the two buildings, ensuring optimal daylight exposure for both structures.

the organization of both buildings allows for a clear zoning: public areas are located on the ground floor, while private learning zones occupy the upper floors. both schools are surrounded by a green buffer of trees shielding them from noise-exposed zones. an additional noise protection layer is provided by acoustic louvers, which also serve as sunshades and a secondary building skin.

grammar school
the public areas are located on the ground floor. an open, flowing circulation route leads through the public zones of the ground floor toward the park on the southern side of the property. this open passage is flanked by the music department, administration offices, science laboratories, and art studios. the path continues into the garden — the school park — where a pavilion for sports and afternoon activities is embedded in greenery.
the lower and upper grades occupy two separate upper floors. three clusters are organized around a central interior zone, with a covered outdoor area in front that serves as a space for outdoor teaching, table tennis, and leisure. the learning levels form a village-like structure, with cluster “neighborhoods” arranged around a large marketplace, which in turn opens onto a spacious “village meadow.” the library is also part of this village structure — reading and research are integrated into daily school life.

a light well generously illuminates the interior zones and connects all levels through staircases and visual links centered around a communal core.

primary school
the primary school is organized analogously; public areas are located on the ground floor, while all learning spaces are on the first floor. the access corridor forms a buffer zone toward wagramerstrasse, while the learning spaces face the quiet garden corridor. all classrooms have direct access to shaded atriums.

the dining areas and after-school care facilities are oriented toward the park. sheltered from the weather, students can eat, read, play, or chat outdoors.

traffic and access
the entrance plaza on maculanstrasse is designed generously, featuring a uniform paving pattern, seating areas, and bicycle parking spaces. kitchen deliveries can be made directly and under weather protection from the outside.

green and open space concept
the green corridor described above runs through both school buildings, connecting various outdoor uses and culminating in a spacious park to the south. different zones provide space for sports and recreation. the structured green roof of the gymnasium offers an additional outdoor and leisure area accessible to both schools.
