jury statement

it is surprising how balanced and well-differentiated the required, in relation to the plot size enormous building volume is integrated into this heterogeneous context in urban-design terms. by articulating the project into a publicly accessible “plinth” that references the height development of the existing buildings and an “elevated” institute volume floating above it, this is achieved in a highly convincing manner. the publicly accessible city terrace as an extension of the campus is a welcome addition to the limited open-space offering. the placement of teaching spaces and gastronomy on this level enables very good use of this area. the sculptural articulation of the plinth offers a lively and varied ground-floor zone all around.

inside, the spacious and spatially well-designed lecture hall centre is located here, excellently connected on all sides to the public realm and easily usable for all kinds of events and communication. the logically gridded basic structure of areas and courtyards allows well-lit circulation and gathering areas even in the basement levels and is robust and flexible for future developments. the interior spatial qualities are convincing due to excellent daylighting and generous visual connections across floors. the building structure is consistent and coherent in its architectural expression. overall, the jury recognizes a project in which university life and communication are stimulated and supported by the architecture in the best possible way.
