lkh knittelfeld renovation

together with lukas schumacher

construction phase 2
the function of construction phase 2 will be handed over to its intended use on 1.5.2012. the special class and the palliative ward as well as the majority of the outpatient clinics are situated in the fully renovated wing. in the central risalit a key milestone in ongoing operations is the commissioning of the entrance hall on the ground floor with a newly added wind lobby.

construction measures
to meet the spatial requirements of a modern hospital operation it was indispensable to intervene extensively in the building’s substance, especially the intermediate partition walls were demolished in large sections and across all floors from the ground floor upwards (as a consequence the vaulted ceilings of the corridor zones had to be replaced by new reinforced‑concrete slabs). thus a new and enlarged circulation zone was created, defined by open waiting zones and day rooms with connection to the exterior, and at the same time enhanced by direct daylight entry. for functional reasons multiple transverse walls also had to be removed to ensure required room sizes and relationships. in the basement a new reinforced‑concrete floor slab and base‑level refurbishment decisively improved the building substance in the foundation area, as did all the above mentioned constructive measures upgrade the existing brick building in its substance.
interior
the interior of the building is fitted with wood wall cladding in contrast to the plain white ceilings and walls, attempting to offer patients and staff a kind of hotel character with a friendly atmosphere for staff and patients alike, similar to the addition. colour‑padded benches throughout the corridor area and the adjacent extensions of the day rooms are intended especially in the central circulation zones to convey a pleasant mood that should ease the stay within the building.

façade
the existing façades were largely renovated; externally this is shown in an unchanged street view, except for the new wind lobby with canopy, which became possible as a result of the removal of the heritage protection on 1.1.2010. on the west side a narrow extension closes the building in a loggia‑like manner; the rescue access arranged here is roofed by a steel‑glass structure.

outdoor facilities
the existing foregarden is newly arranged through the new access aligned with the building axis. the access roads from east and west, walking paths with several seating islands, a new … also more integrated into the urban space at gaalerstraße. construction phase 3 – renovation of the east wing (old building) due to the restructuring of the austrian hospital system and its financing, the further renovation of the building and thus the completion of the overall construction project is currently open.
